What have I been doing?

What Have I Been Doing?

I’ve been trying to come up with something I can post on my blog, but to no avail. There doesn’t seem to be much happening round here… but my son Ra pointed out all the things that I have been doing, and yet they didn’t seem to be of much interest for my cyber friends. Ra disagreed with me on that point.

So… here is some of what’s been going on.

newborn hats 25

I just finished knitting the100th newborn hat that I donate to our Peace Arch Hospital. The Pastor here is delivering the last twenty-five of them for me tomorrow.2008:11:06 30 Toques22008:11:06 43 Pairs Mitts2

On the fifth of December it will be seven years since I moved here… and shortly after that, I joined my friend, Janice, and started knitting for the homeless. I have knit 177 adult size toques, and 136 pairs of mitts.(adult size.), as well as the newborn hats…. and all have been donated.

One of the Churches has an outreach program where they go out on the street to find the homeless.

Another occupation I have recently started…. One of the  ladies here had a stroke a few years back… that’s why she is here. She lost her ability to talk. She communicates with some signs and some guess work on the part of her partner. She came to me and said that I could help her!!

She goes to a speech therapist once a week, but she says it isn’t helping. So every day I spend some time with  her, trying to help her…. and even though I know nothing about what I am trying to do, it seems to be helping… and now the friends that she visits with have joined in, not letting her just use sign language unless she can’t come up with ‘talking” first.

And… I am a Beta reader! When an author writes a book, they read it over a few times, making revisions and corrections. Then someone else reads it, and gives advice where needed…then it goes to a beta reader before it goes on it’s journey to find a publisher…. that’s me! I look for anything that shouldn’t be there, punctuation, etc!

I’m not completely sure about how much I should do!! But I’m doing it. The author is my niece, and it is a great story… I’m enjoying every bit of it.

Oh,…. and today I did a watercolour painting of a Red-Breasted Nuthatch, which I will post on my Flickr page a little later tonight.  http://www.flickr.com/  nonie vogue.

  1. Boy you are one busy person. It is all of these things that keep you young. Keep up the good work as I know all those people and the parents of the newborns really appreciate it. I know when the twins were born at 29 weeks and were in the premi ward they were given a nice quilt when they were moved out of their icelets (not sure how to spell it) and Tina has kept them for them. They were also donated by quilters. Again it is people like you that will be remembered for years for your generosity.

  2. Hi Auntie Norma,
Well you have been a busy bee 🙂 The toques are just lovely and the new born hats are adorable. How fortunate for the homeless that you knit and have such a kind heart. I`ve been thinking about you a lot lately . I`m glad to see you back here filling us in on what you are up to . How are your eyes doing ? Better I hope ! Take care and know you are never far from my thoughts.
    love you
    Kallie

    • Hi Kallie! Nice to have you come for a visit… I’m managing with the Diplopia (double vision) in my eyes. There’s time when I just have to sit back and do nothing, but other times I’m able to function. They will never get better… the doctors “can’t do anything to help’…. so… I will live with it! I do appreciate your visit.

  3. Ra was right – this is all *very* interesting and made more so by the nifty photos. Gorgeous work that you do and so important.
My dad lost his ability to speak well after a stroke and may God bless you and your friends for helping. Even just the attempt is so important because sometimes it’s just too easy to ignore someone when communication is a bit of a struggle. I will always remember the clerk at Birks who took the time to talk to my dad – who was the real customer – and not rely on me who was pushing his wheelchair. 25 years ago and I still remember!
Sorry I’ve been out of touch. Times have been really stressful regarding my mom. We are both in the throes of adapting to her new life in a care home.
    Hugs!

    • Dear Heather..Thanks for your visit, I do appreciate each one who stops by.. Sorry to hear about your mom , but that is the best place for her a time when she needs more help than family can give. Once she settles in, she will really appreciate all that it entails…. and you will be able to relax. She will be well cared for if the place is anything like where I am.

  4. Aunty Norma, you always amaze me with your talents. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend.
    Take care.

    Love Daria
